Check the official rule for your passport
Whether you need a visa for Albania depends on your nationality, the passport or travel document you use, the length and purpose of your stay, and whether you hold another qualifying visa or residence permit.
Use the Albanian Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs visa-regime checker to select your passport country. If the official result says a visa is required, apply only through the official Albania e-Visa portal.
Entry and visa rules can change. Confirm the result again shortly before departure and contact the nearest Albanian diplomatic mission if your passport type or circumstances are unusual.
Do you need a visa to visit Albania?
Many travellers can visit Albania without a visa, usually for a short stay. Others must obtain an Albanian visa before travel. A traveller who would normally need a visa may qualify for an exemption through a valid residence permit or a previously used qualifying multiple-entry visa, but every condition must be met.
The official nationality checker is the controlling source. Wonder Albania does not issue visas and cannot decide whether a traveller will be admitted.
Who may enter Albania without a visa?
The Albanian Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs currently identifies several visa-free routes:
- travellers whose nationality is visa-exempt under Albania’s official visa regime;
- holders of a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa that has already been used in a Schengen state, or a valid Schengen residence permit;
- holders of a valid multiple-entry visa or valid residence permit issued by an EU country, the United States or the United Kingdom, including an electronic document, where the visa has already been used in the issuing country;
- holders of a 10-year United Arab Emirates residence permit that remains valid for at least one year on entry;
- foreign citizens who can enter and stay in the Schengen Area without a visa; and
- certain holders of refugee, stateless-person, alien or subsidiary-protection travel documents issued by EU member states.
Where entry depends on another visa or residence permit, the Ministry says the traveller must leave Albania no later than three days before that document expires. Read the exact wording on the official visa-regime page.
The Ministry also currently states that citizens of Saudi Arabia and Qatar may enter visa-free with a passport for tourism from 15 April to 31 December 2026. This is a temporary rule and should be rechecked before travel.
Common passport-country examples
These examples apply to ordinary tourist passports and do not replace the Albanian government’s nationality checker.
United States citizens
U.S. citizens may enter Albania as tourists without a visa. The U.S. Department of State currently states that U.S. citizens may stay for up to one year without applying for a residence permit. British citizens
British citizens travelling on a full British citizen passport may visit Albania without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism or business. Longer stays require the appropriate long-stay visa or residence permission. See the UK government’s Albania entry requirements.
Canadian citizens
Canadian citizens travelling on a regular Canadian passport do not need a tourist visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. See the Government of Canada’s Albania travel advice and reconfirm with the Albanian Ministry checker.
For every other nationality—and for diplomatic, service, refugee or other non-standard travel documents—use the official Albanian checker rather than relying on a general example.
Passport requirements for Albania
Travellers who do not need a visa
The Albanian Ministry states that the passport or valid travel document must:
- remain valid for at least three months after the date you leave Albania; and
- have been issued within the previous ten years.
Travellers who need a visa
The passport or valid travel document must:
- remain valid for at least three months beyond the requested visa period;
- contain at least two blank pages for visa stamps; and
- be accompanied in the application by copies of pages relevant to the trip.
Airlines may apply their own document checks. Renew a damaged, reported-lost or insufficiently valid passport before travelling.
Albania Type C tourist visa
An Albanian Type C visa is the short-stay visa for a person who needs a visa to visit Albania. It permits stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, calculated from the first entry. It may be issued for one, two or multiple entries, and its validity cannot exceed five years.
For a tourism Type C application, the Ministry currently lists:
- a round-trip ticket reservation;
- a hotel booking or other accommodation information for the stay;
- proof of sufficient funds, such as bank statements; and
- proof of employment in the country of nationality or residence, or other sufficient evidence that the applicant will return there.
General visa documentation can also include the online application form, a recent passport photograph, a copy of the valid travel document, travel health insurance for the visa period, and parental or guardian consent for applicants under 18. How to apply for an Albania visa
- Check your passport country in the Albanian Ministry’s visa-regime tool.
- Confirm whether Type C, Type D or another category matches the purpose and length of the stay.
- Prepare the documents required for that exact category.
- Submit the application through e-visa.al, the official Albanian government portal.
- Follow the portal’s instructions about corrections, supporting documents and the applicable fee.
- After acceptance and payment, follow the consular instructions for original documents and, where requested, passport presentation.
- Wait for the official decision before making arrangements that cannot be changed or refunded.
Avoid unofficial visa websites. In April 2026, the Albanian Ministry warned about an unauthorised site imitating visa services and confirmed that e-visa.al is the only official electronic visa application website.
Processing time and visa fees
The Albanian Ministry states that a visa is issued within up to 15 days after acceptance of the application and that exceptional cases may take up to 30 days. Acceptance is a stage in the process, not the date a draft application is started. Apply well ahead of travel and do not treat these periods as a guarantee of approval.
There is no single universal visa price. The Ministry states that fees are based on reciprocity and may depend on nationality and visa category. The official application process tells an accepted applicant which fee to pay. Do not send payment based on a fee quoted by an unofficial intermediary.

The correct Type D subcategory depends on the purpose, such as work, study or family reunification, and has its own evidence requirements.
What to carry when entering Albania
A visa or visa exemption does not guarantee admission. The border authorities make the admission decision. Keep the documents supporting your specific entry basis accessible, which may include:
- your valid passport or travel document;
- the Albanian visa or e-Visa decision, if required;
- the qualifying visa or residence permit relied on for an exemption;
- accommodation information;
- return or onward travel details;
- evidence of sufficient funds; and
- travel insurance and any documents required for the purpose of the trip.
Not every item is mandatory for every traveller, but border officers may ask for evidence supporting the intended stay.

Is Albania in the Schengen Area?
No. Albania is an EU candidate country, but it is not one of the 29 Schengen countries. Albania applies its own entry and visa rules.
Can I enter Albania with a Schengen visa?
Possibly. The Albanian Ministry permits visa-free entry for a holder of a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa that has already been used in a Schengen state, or a valid Schengen residence permit. All document-validity and stay conditions still apply.

Do children need travel documents?
Yes. Children need their own valid travel document and must meet the entry rules that apply to them. A visa applicant under 18 must provide a statement of consent from a parent, legal guardian or responsible person. Is travel health insurance required for an Albania visa?
Yes, the Ministry lists travel health insurance for the duration of the visa among the general documents for Type C and Type D applications. Visa-exempt travellers should still consider appropriate travel insurance for medical care, disruption and planned activities.
