Lake Koman ferry: the boat to Valbona, times and how to do it

Passenger ferry on Lake Koman between steep green mountains, Albania

Most people take this boat once, in one direction, because the point is Valbona — not a lap of the lake.

From Shkodër and the west, the practical way into Valbona is not one long mountain road. You reach the Koman dock, cross the reservoir by boat to Fierzë, then take a minibus or taxi up the valley. The boat is the journey, not a transfer you should sleep through.

Why the ferry is worth it

Lake Koman is a reservoir on the Drin, not an arm of the sea. Albania’s national tourism site describes it as a lake created in 1985 by the Koman dam, part of the Drin hydropower system, and known for deep canyons. The boat runs between those walls. For long stretches the water is a flooded gorge: steep slopes, little shore, and no horizon of open lake.

That is why people take it. Driving around to Valbona from the west is a different, much longer day. The ferry is not a gimmick shortcut pasted onto a bus route. If you only want to tick off a boat, a Shala River cruise from Koman is a separate trip and does not land you in the Valbona valley.

Weather changes the day more than the timetable does. In sun the rock and the green water are the whole point; in low cloud you still get the scale, just with less colour. Either way it is a slow crossing of about two and a half hours, not a harbour hop.

The route: Koman, Fierzë, then Valbona

The line that matters for Valbona is Koman to Fierzë (also written Fierza), and the reverse. Ferry Berisha, the operator that publishes the vehicle ferry, states a daily sailing from Koman at 09:00 and from Fierzë at 13:00, and a crossing of about two and a half hours. A second public timetable, from Komani Ferry, matches that clock: Koman at 09:00, Fierzë around 11:30, return from Fierzë at 13:00, back at Koman around 15:30. More than one company sells tickets, so the time on your own ticket wins if it differs.

Fierzë is not Valbona. From the dock it is a road of about one to one and a half hours into the village, which is what both Berisha’s connections and Komani Ferry’s through-tickets are built around. On a morning boat you are in the valley around early afternoon, not at sunrise.

How long, and one way versus coming back

The boat is the short middle of a long day. Add the road to the dock before it and the valley road after it, and Shkodër to Valbona is a morning that finishes after lunch. Most people ride one way and stay in the valley. The same-day return is real, and it is a poor way to see Valbona.

One way, a lake lap, or a later return
PlanWhat the published clocks allowBest if
One way to ValbonaKoman 09:00, Fierzë about 11:30, then 1–1.5 hours by roadYou want the valley, not a second crossing today
Same-day returnAbout an hour at Fierzë before the 13:00 boat back to KomanYou only want the gorge and will sleep back in Shkodër or Tirana
Back on a later dayA morning pickup from Valbona for the 13:00 Fierzë departureYou are staying in the valley, or hiking on towards Theth

The reason is simple arithmetic. Valbona is one to one and a half hours from Fierzë, and the return boat leaves Fierzë at 13:00. You cannot reach the village and make that sailing. Come back another day, leave the valley on foot over the pass towards Theth, or treat the boat as an out-and-back from Koman and skip Valbona.

Getting to the dock and onward from Fierzë

Connecting services publish the road times that matter for the 09:00 boat. Komani Ferry allows about two hours from Shkodër (a 06:30 pickup at the Migjeni theatre, at the dock around 08:30–08:45) and about three and a half hours from Tirana, with a 05:30 departure. Berisha lists its own Shkodër pickup at 06:45 and Tirana at 05:30. If you drive yourself, leave with those clocks in mind and add time for the last narrow stretch to the dam. Passengers should be at the terminal 15 minutes before sailing; vehicles, 30.

At Fierzë, the onward seat is part of a through-ticket or a separate ride. Berisha publishes shared Fierzë–Valbona departures and a private taxi; Komani Ferry’s Valbona package continues by road to the guesthouse, about one to one and a half hours. If you are not on a through-ticket, agree the Valbona fare before the bags go in. The road is the valley road, not a city shuttle, so a loose plan at the dock is how the afternoon goes wrong.

Cars and passengers on the open deck of a ferry in the narrow Lake Koman gorge

Cars can board, but only on the boat that says so. Ferry Berisha publishes vehicle space for cars, camper vans, minibuses, motorcycles and bicycles, not super-heavy vehicles. You reserve ahead with the vehicle type, the deck area and the plate number. Space is limited in high season. Without a confirmation you cannot drive into the terminal tunnel, and you cannot park in that tunnel either; the operator lists parking a short walk from the dock. Passenger boats on the lake are a different product.

When to go and what to bring

Berisha’s timetable page states a daily service from 15 April to 5 November. The same site also carries a note that the season starts from 11 April, so the first and last sailing move and you should confirm the year you travel. Outside that published window, do not assume a daily boat. Summer is the reliable season for linking the ferry to guesthouses in Valbona; book the valley bed before you go in July and August, because you arrive in the afternoon.

Berisha’s own price list, checked for this guide, shows a passenger fare of €8.80 online and €10 in cash, with cars charged by the square metre. Other companies publish their own figures, and both change, so treat that as a snapshot and read the operator you will actually board. Online card or PayPal payment is the cheaper Berisha option; cash is still accepted after boarding. Do not pay anyone who asks for the fare in the street.

On the day

  • Ticket or reservation confirmation — mandatory before a car enters the terminal
  • Cash, even if you paid the boat online, for the valley ride and small stops
  • A layer for wind on the open deck; the gorge funnels it even in summer
  • Sun protection and water for the crossing and the dock wait
  • A booked bed in Valbona if you are travelling in July or August
  • The plate number and vehicle size to hand if you are taking a car

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Lake Koman ferry?

About two and a half hours. On the main published timetable the boat leaves Koman at 09:00 and reaches Fierzë around 11:30. The return leaves Fierzë at 13:00 and is back at Koman around 15:30.

Can I take a car to Valbona on the ferry?

Yes on Ferry Berisha, if you reserve vehicle space ahead with the type, deck area and plate number. Passenger boats, including Dragobia, are not the car ferry. You cannot drive into the terminal tunnel without a confirmation.

Can I visit Valbona and boat back the same day?

Not in any useful way. The return leaves Fierzë at 13:00, and the village is another one to one and a half hours each way. A same-day return only suits a gorge outing that stops at Fierzë.

Does the ferry run in winter?

The daily service Berisha publishes runs from 15 April to 5 November, with a separate note that the season can start from 11 April. Do not plan the crossing outside that window without checking the operator.

Is this a sea ferry?

No. Lake Koman is a hydroelectric reservoir on the Drin. The ride is a narrow gorge between the Koman dam and Fierzë, then a road into Valbona.

If you would rather not stitch the dock, the boat and the valley road yourself, two of our longer journeys already use the lake, and a shorter Alps trip does not. Read the line under each one so you know whether the ferry is included.
