Rozafa Castle occupies the rocky height where the Buna and Drin meet near the Kir. The fortress has Illyrian foundations and later Roman, Venetian and Ottoman layers, but its most enduring story is the legend of Rozafa, whose sacrifice is woven into Albanian oral tradition.

From the walls, the whole geography of northern Albania opens at once: Shkodër, the lake, river plains and the first mountain ridges. Visit early or late for softer light and cooler paths, then continue to the Lead Mosque and old neighbourhoods below the castle.

Photography, faith and the streets of Gjuhadol

Shkodër has long been one of Albania’s centres of literature, music and visual culture. The Marubi National Museum of Photography preserves a remarkable archive beginning in the nineteenth century, turning portraits, street scenes and historical events into an intimate record of Albanian life.

Around pedestrian Gjuhadol, restored houses, galleries and cafés sit close to the Ebu Bekr Mosque, Franciscan Church and Catholic Cathedral. This proximity reflects the religious coexistence central to the city’s identity. Rent a bicycle to follow Shkodër’s flat streets at a local pace.

Lake light and the road to the Alps

Lake Shkodër spreads west of the city, shared with Montenegro and edged by wetlands, fishing villages and mountain silhouettes. The lakeside route toward Shiroka and Zogaj is ideal for cycling, sunset walks and unhurried meals built around carp, eel and local wine.

For many travellers, Shkodër is also the logistical doorway to Theth, the Valbona Valley and the Accursed Mountains. Spend time in the city before or after the trek: its museums, food and evening life provide cultural context for the northern landscapes rather than merely a place to change buses.
