Life beside an ancient lake

Pogradec faces one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, with the Albanian shore included in the transboundary UNESCO World Heritage property of the Lake Ohrid region. Mountains frame a vast changing surface whose colour, wind and light shape the city from the first fishing boats at dawn to the evening promenade.

The waterfront supports swimming, boating, cycling and unhurried café stops, but its ecological value is as important as recreation. The endemic koran fish is the city’s culinary symbol; choose responsible local restaurants and pair it with regional vegetables, pickles and wine while remembering that this rare lake ecosystem needs careful protection.

The lakeside promenade is Pogradec’s social centre, especially during the evening xhiro. Behind it, streets climb toward the older settlement and the hill traditionally known as Pogradec Castle, where traces of fortification and broad views connect the modern resort city to much earlier habitation.

Pogradec is also closely associated with poet Lasgush Poradeci and writer Mitrush Kuteli, whose work gives the lake a powerful place in Albanian literature. Drilon, Tushemisht and the road to Lin

East of the city, the springs and channels of Drilon flow through a shaded park of trees, footbridges and water birds before reaching Lake Ohrid. Nearby Tushemisht adds traditional houses, a long lakeshore, restaurants and film history, creating an easy half-day extension that feels greener and more village-like than central Pogradec.

Westward, Lin occupies a dramatic peninsula above the water, with early Christian mosaics and archaeological evidence of very ancient lakeside settlement. Farther inland, Selca’s royal tombs and mountain trails broaden the story. Pogradec works best as a three-day base linking water, heritage, villages and southeastern cuisine.
