Saranda opens in a broad curve toward Corfu, with a palm-lined promenade connecting the port, city beaches, cafés and restaurants. The water is never far from view, and the daily ferry traffic gives the city an outward-looking character that feels both Albanian and unmistakably Mediterranean.

Walk the waterfront early, before beach traffic builds, or join the evening promenade when the whole bay lights up. Restaurants range from simple fish taverns to modern terraces; seek out mussels from nearby Butrint Lake, grilled seafood and southern Albanian dishes influenced by Greece.

Lëkurësi Castle rises above the city with a complete view of Saranda, Corfu, the islands of Ksamil and the surrounding mountains. Its strategic position makes the geography immediately clear and turns sunset into one of the destination’s defining experiences.

Saranda’s history reaches beyond the castle. The remains of the ancient synagogue sit within the modern centre, while the Monastery of the Forty Saints on the opposite ridge recalls the settlement that gave the city its present name. Together they add depth to a place often seen only through its beaches.

South of Saranda, UNESCO-listed Butrint layers Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian remains within a wooded lagoon landscape. Ksamil’s pale coves and small islands lie on the same route, making archaeology and swimming an unusually easy combination when the day is planned outside peak traffic.

Inland, the Blue Eye spring and villages of the Drinos Valley offer a cooler counterpoint to the coast. Saranda can anchor three to five days of varied travel, but reserve transport in high summer and start popular excursions early for a calmer, more rewarding visit.
