Scampis and the road across the Balkans

Elbasan grew at a strategic point on the Via Egnatia, the Roman road linking the Adriatic with Thessaloniki and Constantinople. The fortified settlement of Scampis established the city’s enduring geometry; Ottoman reconstruction later reinforced the walls and shaped the castle quarter visible today.

Unlike a monument sealed off from daily life, the castle remains an inhabited neighbourhood. Enter through the surviving gate to find homes, gardens, lanes, cafés and archaeological fragments. The Clock Tower gives the district its vertical landmark while sections of wall reveal different building periods.

Faiths sharing one historic quarter

Inside the walls, the King Mosque stands among Albania’s oldest surviving mosques, while the Orthodox Church of Saint Mary preserves carved woodwork and icons. A short walk beyond the castle reaches the Catholic church and newer places of worship, making Elbasan’s tradition of religious coexistence tangible within everyday streets.

The city also has a deep educational and linguistic legacy, associated with the Normal School and the development of Albanian-language teaching. Small museums, traditional houses and conversations with residents give this history a human scale often missed by travellers crossing central Albania too quickly.

Spring traditions and the Shkumbin valley

Elbasan is the symbolic home of Dita e Verës, Albania’s great Spring Day celebration on 14 March. The signature food is ballokume, a rich corn-flour biscuit whose aroma fills bakeries and family kitchens. Taverns add grilled meats, vegetable dishes and recipes rooted in the fertile Shkumbin valley.

Beyond the city, the road climbs toward Gjinar and the Shpat Mountains for pine forests, village meals and cooler summer air. Elbasan can be a compact day trip, but an overnight stay allows the castle after the crowds, a slower dinner and a fuller view of central Albania beyond the capital.
