A city rebuilt above the water

Modern Kukës was built on higher ground after the original town was submerged during the creation of the Fierza reservoir in the 1970s. That unusual history explains its broad plan, open viewpoints and strong relationship with the water and mountains on every side.

The city also became internationally known in 1999, when residents welcomed a vast number of refugees from Kosovo. Local museums and memorial spaces connect that humanitarian chapter with the wider history of the Gora and Lumë highlands, where kinship and hospitality remain defining values.

Where two Drin rivers become a lake

Near Kukës, the White Drin and Black Drin meet before flowing into the long Fierza reservoir. The result is a striking geography of blue water, peninsulas, bridges and steep slopes that changes character with the weather and the reservoir level.

Viewpoints around the city reveal the scale, but the landscape rewards a guided drive or hike into the surrounding hills. Mount Gjallica dominates the skyline and offers demanding routes for experienced walkers; lower village paths provide gentler introductions to the region’s geology and pastoral life.

Highland villages and borderland culture

Kukës is the natural base for exploring Shishtavec, the Korab–Koritnik Nature Park and remote settlements along Albania’s northeastern border. Stone houses, high pastures and winter snow distinguish this region sharply from the Mediterranean coast, while roads reveal wide views toward Kosovo and North Macedonia.

Local food is substantial and seasonal: flija, maize breads, mountain dairy products, beans and slow-cooked meat suit the climate. Travel with time, check mountain conditions and use local guides for remote routes. The reward is a generous region still outside most standard Albania itineraries.
