Why Albania's castles

Seven fortresses, seven different stories.

More than viewpoints, these castles are layered records of Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman worlds. Some are monumental citadels. Others are small, wind-shaped ruins that reward the detour as much as the destination.

01

Berat · Central Albania

Berat Castle

Historic hill town in the green Albanian landscape
Berat Castle and the Osum valley.

A fortress that still wakes up every morning. Berat Castle is less a monument than a small stone neighbourhood suspended above the Osum valley.

Enter through the great arched gate and the city noise softens. Cobbled lanes pass whitewashed homes, small gardens, Byzantine churches and viewpoints hidden between walls.

Come late in the day, when the stone loses its glare and the roofs below catch the warm light.

Gjirokastër · Southern Albania

Gjirokastër Castle

Green Albanian valley surrounded by dramatic mountain ridges
Gjirokastër's fortress above the Drino valley.

Long, severe and impossible to miss, Gjirokastër's fortress gives the Stone City its extraordinary silhouette.

Inside, vaulted corridors and immense walls make the castle feel almost like a city above the city.

Visit soon after opening for quiet passages, then walk back through the bazaar as cafés lift their shutters.

Gjirokastër is the castle where Albania's scale becomes visible — stone town, open valley and mountains in one frame.

Butrint's Venetian Castle

The final climb in an extraordinary archaeological park, overlooking water and centuries of settlement.

A castle route should still feel like a holiday.

The temptation is to collect fortresses. Resist it. Albania's roads are part of the experience, and every castle is stronger when paired with the landscape it once protected.

When to go

April to June and September to October bring comfortable climbs and gentler light.

What to bring

Grippy shoes, water and sun protection. Uneven stone is part of nearly every visit.

How to travel

A car or private driver gives the best rhythm. Build in two-night stays rather than moving daily.
