Byrek and the morning habit
Byrek (savoury filo pie) is daily fuel, not a tourist stunt. Spinach, cheese, meat or mixed — grab it from a neighbourhood byrektore, eat standing or at a tiny table, and move on. Look for steady local traffic rather than English menus in the window. Pair with yoghurt or a simple coffee. It is cheap, filling and available from early morning.
Fërgesë and classic Albanian plates
Fërgesë — peppers, tomatoes and cottage cheese (often with liver in the Tirana style) — is a comfort dish worth seeking in traditional restaurants. Add qofte (meatballs), grilled meats, fresh salads and seasonal vegetables. Portions are generous; sharing is normal. Lunch can be the main meal; evenings stretch later in warmer months.

Seafood and the coast connection
Tirana is inland, but good seafood arrives daily from the Adriatic. Fish restaurants and mixed grills work well if you want something lighter than heavy meat plates. Ask what came in that morning. Prices sit above byrek and home-style stews — still fair by western European standards if you avoid pure tourist traps around the noisiest squares.
Blloku vs traditional
Blloku is the lively café-and-bar district: cocktails, international menus, late dinners and people-watching. Useful for a polished night out. For older flavours and quieter tables, look to family-run restaurants and tavernas away from the densest nightlife strips — often a short walk, not a taxi across the city. Both scenes are “real”; they just serve different moods.
Coffee culture
Coffee is social infrastructure. Espresso, macchiato and Turkish-style coffee appear everywhere; people sit for conversation, not a rushed takeaway. Mid-morning and late afternoon are classic window times. Service is usually friendly and unhurried — match the pace. Tip modestly when service is table-based; round up for counter byrek.
