Albania in October: weather, sea temperature and where to go

October in Albania is two trips sharing one month: a soft end to summer on the coast, then a quieter stretch made for stone towns, long lunches and shorter walks.

People searching for Albania in October usually want three answers: will it be warm, can I swim, and what is still open. The short version: the first fortnight often feels like late September, while the second brings more rain, earlier sunsets and a country that leans towards its towns and kitchens. This guide stays on October alone. For the wider September to November picture, read Visiting Albania in autumn; for the whole year, see Best time to visit Albania.

Is October a good time to visit Albania?

Yes, for most first trips that mix heritage towns with some coast. Long-term averages put lowland daytime highs at 22-24 °C, the sea holds around 21 °C, and the summer crush has gone: INSTAT counted 908,642 foreign-citizen arrivals in October 2025, against 2,381,864 in August 2025. Hotels in Berat, Gjirokastër and Tirana run as normal, and you can walk a castle at noon without hunting for shade.

October is a weaker fit if your holiday depends on hot beach afternoons in the last week, or on a high mountain crossing with no spare day. It suits couples and friends who like to walk and eat well, slow travellers, and anyone who would rather trade a sunbed for an empty old town.

October weather by region

Albania changes quickly from coast to mountain, so a single October number misleads. The table uses long-term October averages from Climates to Travel: daytime highs, night lows, rainfall and rainy days. Treat them as a planning baseline, then check the forecast a few days before you travel.

October averages by place (Climates to Travel)
PlaceDay / nightRainRainy daysSea
Durrës (central coast)24 °C / 14 °C110 mm921 °C
Vlorë (southern coast)24 °C / 14 °C120 mm1021 °C
Tirana23 °C / 11 °C105 mm7Inland
Shkodër (gateway to the Alps)22 °C / 12 °C170 mm9Inland
Gjirokastër24 °C / 9 °C130 mm7Inland
Korçë (about 900 m)19 °C / 8 °C80 mm7Inland

Three details catch people out. Shkodër, the usual base for the Alps, is the wettest place on the list, so northern plans need slack. Gjirokastër's nights drop to about 9 °C, which means a proper layer for the evening castle walk. And the light goes fast: in Tirana the sun sets at about 18:20 on 1 October and about 18:00 by mid-month, then the clocks go back on Sunday 25 October and sunset jumps to roughly 16:45. Long drives and mountain days belong in the morning.

Early October versus late October

The month splits roughly around the 15th. In the first half the coast still behaves like late summer on a good day, mountain guesthouses are mostly open, and rain tends to arrive in short fronts. In the second half fronts come more often, evenings cool, seasonal beach businesses close and the Alps become a day-by-day decision. Neither half is bad; they are different trips.

If you can choose, book the first half for a mixed trip and the second half for a slow cultural one. If your dates are fixed to late October, it is still a good trip: plan it inland and treat the Riviera as scenery and seafood rather than a beach base.

Can you swim in Albania in October?

Usually, yes, if you are happy with fresher water. Climates to Travel gives an October sea average of 21 °C at both Durrës and Vlorë, down from 23-24 °C in September. The sea cools more slowly than the air, so a still, sunny afternoon in the first half of the month can be lovely. By the last week most visitors keep it to a short swim.

The far south is the easiest choice: Ksamil, Sarandë and the bays around Himarë pair a swim with Butrint and the Blue Eye, and Sarandë and Himarë keep enough year-round life that you are not hunting for dinner at 20:00. Expect fewer sunbeds and beach bars as the month goes on. Small villages can feel shut after mid-October, so base yourself in a town rather than a seasonal cove.

Theth, Valbona and the Koman ferry in October

October is colour season in the Accursed Mountains, and it is also the month the season closes. The Theth to Valbona crossing is usually workable in the first half of the month on a settled forecast; our Theth to Valbona hike guide covers the day itself, and Best hikes in Albania this autumn has shorter options. After mid-month, snow or ice on the pass and guesthouses shutting for winter make it a decision you take the day before, not months ahead. The road from Shkodër into Theth is paved, so a valley stay without the crossing is a sensible fallback, as long as your guesthouse is still open.

The Lake Koman ferry, the usual way into Valbona from the west, runs to an early-November finish. Ferry Berisha publishes a daily Koman-Fierzë service from 15 April to 5 November, while Nord West lists its season as 1 April to 1 November. Either can cancel in bad weather, so confirm the date before you tie a hike to the boat. Our Lake Koman ferry guide has the sailing times and dock logistics.

Where to go in Albania in October

October is when the UNESCO towns are most comfortable. Berat's castle quarter and Osum riverfront, and Gjirokastër's steep stone lanes, are easier on foot without summer heat, and an overnight lets you see both after the day visitors leave. Lonely Planet points wine lovers to the end of September through mid-October for the grape harvest around Berat. Read Berat: one day or overnight? and our Gjirokastër guide before you set your nights.

Tirana runs at full pace all month. The 10th Tirana Marathon is on Sunday 25 October 2026, starting from Skanderbeg Square, and the city closes central roads for the race with notices published in advance. It is a lively weekend to be in town; book your hotel early and plan airport transfers around the closures. Things to do in Tirana has a two to three day plan.

Further south and east, Përmet and the Vjosa valley make a good late-month detour, and the Bënjë thermal pools near the town are a pleasure once the air cools. Korçë sits at about 900 m, so expect crisp nights with an October average low of 8 °C. Olive picking begins in October in some southern groves, though much of the harvest runs into November and December depending on area and variety.

A 7-day Albania itinerary for October

This loop puts the coast first while the sea is warmest and finishes in the stone towns, which hold up in any weather. It works from Tirana with a hire car or a private driver; for the practicalities of driving yourself, see Renting a car in Albania.

Seven days in October: coast first, towns last

  1. Day 1: Tirana

Arrive, walk the centre and the Blloku cafés, and keep the evening easy. If you land late, save museums for the next morning.

  2. Day 2: Tirana to Himarë over Llogara

Drive south via Vlorë and the Llogara Pass, stopping at viewpoints while the light is good. Sleep in Himarë, which keeps enough open in October to eat well.

  3. Day 3: A Riviera day

Swim at a bay near Himarë on a calm afternoon, or visit the fortress at Porto Palermo if the sea is rough. This is your weather swap day.

  4. Day 4: Butrint and Ksamil

Continue south to Butrint in the morning, then a swim or a long lunch at Ksamil. Sleep in Sarandë, the most year-round base on this stretch.

  5. Day 5: Blue Eye to Gjirokastër

Walk to the Blue Eye spring, then head inland to Gjirokastër for the castle and bazaar in late-afternoon light. Bring a warm layer for the evening.

  6. Day 6: Gjirokastër to Berat

The longest drive of the week. Leave early so you arrive with time to walk the castle quarter and watch the lights come on across the Osum.

  7. Day 7: Berat to Tirana

A slow morning in Berat, then back to Tirana. If you fly the same day, leave a generous margin for traffic around the capital.

Travelling in late October? Cut the coast to one night in Sarandë and add a night in Përmet after Gjirokastër for the thermal pools. Got ten days and early dates? Add Shkodër, Theth and the Koman ferry at the start, while the north is still open. For how long each version really needs, see How many days in Albania.

What stays open and what to book ahead

Cities do not close. Hotels, restaurants, castles and museums in Tirana, Berat, Gjirokastër, Shkodër and Sarandë trade all year, though some sites move to shorter winter hours, so check opening times the day before. What winds down is the seasonal layer: beach bars, boat trips, sunbed hire and some family guesthouses in small coastal villages and the Alps.

Book ahead for the Tirana Marathon weekend, for Theth and Valbona in the first half of the month, and for the October half-term week (26-30 October 2026 for most schools in England) if you are travelling with children. Most other things are easy to arrange at short notice. Our Albania packing list by season covers the October layers.

October trip checklist

  • Check your dates against Sunday 25 October: the Tirana Marathon and the clock change fall on the same day
  • Confirm Theth or Valbona beds and the Koman ferry date directly
  • Base coast nights in Sarandë or Himarë rather than seasonal villages
  • Pack a waterproof and a warm layer as well as swimwear
  • Finish long drives before dark: around 18:00 early in the month, 16:45 at the end
  • Keep one flexible day for a rain front

Frequently asked questions

Is October a good time to visit Albania?

Yes, especially the first half. Lowland days average about 22-24 °C, the sea around 21 °C, and foreign arrivals in October 2025 were well under half of August's. The second half is wetter and better for towns than beaches.

Can you swim in Albania in October?

Yes for most people in the first half of the month: the sea averages about 21 °C on the coast. By late October it is a brisk dip. Ksamil, Sarandë and Himarë are the easiest bases.

What is the weather like in Albania at the end of October?

Cooler and wetter than the start of the month, with chilly nights inland and more frequent rain fronts. Sunset in Tirana moves to about 16:45 after the clocks go back on 25 October. Plan a towns-and-food trip rather than a beach week.

Can you hike Theth to Valbona in October?

Often in the first half of the month on a settled forecast, with a spare day for weather. Later in October snow, ice and closing guesthouses make it uncertain, so decide close to the day and keep a lower-level plan ready.

Does the Lake Koman ferry run in October?

Yes. Ferry Berisha publishes daily sailings from 15 April to 5 November and Nord West lists a season to 1 November. Confirm your date with the operator, as weather can cancel sailings.

Is Albania a good choice for October half-term?

Yes for a family trip built around Tirana, Berat, Gjirokastër and Butrint, with a swim as a bonus rather than the plan. Half-term in England mostly falls on 26-30 October 2026, the wetter and darker end of the month, so choose town bases and keep driving days short.

Where is the best place to go in Albania in October?

Berat and Gjirokastër for heritage, Tirana for food and city life, Sarandë and Ksamil for a last swim early in the month, and Theth or Valbona only in the first half with a weather buffer.

If you would rather we shaped the month for you, these published routes run in October. The 5-day Essential Express covers the southern loop above; the 8-day Signature Journey adds the north at an easy pace; the 10-day Grand Mosaic includes Theth and the Koman boat, so book it for early October.
