Albania in December: weather, festive towns and what's open

December in Albania is a month for towns rather than beaches: mild, wet days on the plains, frosty nights in the hills, and squares lit up for the festive season.

People searching for Albania in December usually want to know three things: how cold and wet it really is, what is still open, and whether the trip is worth it. The short answer is yes for towns, food and the festive season, and no for beaches and mountain hiking. This guide stays on December alone. For the whole December to February picture, read Albania in winter; for the Tirana market and New Year's Eve in detail, see Christmas and New Year in Tirana.

Is December a good time to visit Albania?

Yes, if you come for the towns rather than the coast. Lowland days average about 14 to 15 °C, the stone towns and museums stay open, and from early December the main squares fill with lights and markets. It is also quiet: INSTAT counted 698,742 foreign-citizen arrivals in December 2025, against 2,381,864 in August 2025, so you share Berat and Gjirokastër mostly with the people who live there.

December is a poor fit if you want a swim, a sunbed or the high Alps. It is the wettest stretch of the year in Tirana and the south, days are short, and the mountain north is a winter landscape to look at rather than hike through. It suits couples and friends on a city break, food lovers, families who want lights and markets without big crowds, and anyone who prefers an empty castle to a busy beach.

December weather in Albania by region

Albania goes from mild coast to properly cold uplands within a few hours' drive, so one December number misleads. The table uses long-term December averages from Climates to Travel: daytime highs, night lows, rainfall and rainy days, plus sea temperature on the coast. Kuçovë, about 20 km from Berat, stands in for Berat because the source has no Berat station. Treat the figures as a planning baseline, then check the forecast a few days out.

December averages by place (Climates to Travel)
PlaceDay / nightRainRainy daysSea
Durrës (central coast)15 °C / 6 °C140 mm1315.5 °C
Vlorë (southern coast)15 °C / 6 °C165 mm1416 °C
Tirana14 °C / 3 °C175 mm12Inland
Kuçovë (near Berat)15 °C / 3 °C85 mm8Inland
Gjirokastër12.5 °C / 1.5 °C206 mm12Inland
Shkodër (gateway to the Alps)11 °C / 4 °C188 mm11Inland
Korçë (about 900 m)7 °C / 0 °C100 mm10Inland

Three things stand out. Rain is the main character: Gjirokastër, Tirana and Shkodër each average well over 150 mm, usually in fronts with crisp, clear days between them, and Tirana sees only about three hours of sunshine a day. Frost is rare in the lowlands but normal in Korçë, where nights hover around freezing. And the mountain north is a different country: Climates to Travel has no station for Theth, but at around 750 m in an Alpine valley it is a snow-and-ice place in December, not a hiking one. Sea temperatures of 15.5 to 16 °C are for looking at, not swimming in.

With sunset around 16:10 all month, the rule is simple: sightseeing and drives in the morning, museums, cafés and long dinners after dark. Staying into the new year? Our guide to Albania in January and February covers the weather, snow and what is open in the quietest weeks.

Where to go in Albania in December

Tirana is the natural base. Cafés, museums and restaurants run at full pace, the Bunk'Art bunkers and the House of Leaves carry a wet afternoon, and the Dajti Ekspres cable car is worth a clear morning (it does not run on Tuesdays). From early December the centre is lit up and the Skanderbeg Square market opens; Things to do in Tirana has a two to three day plan and Albanian winter food and where to eat it covers the slow-cooked dishes this month is made for.

Berat and Gjirokastër are at their most atmospheric. Day visitors have gone, the castle quarters are yours, and on a clear day there is snow on the peaks above the Drino valley. Stone lanes get slippery after rain, so wear shoes with grip, and stay overnight to see the lights come on. Read Berat: one day or overnight? and our Gjirokastër guide before you set your nights.

Korçë is the town that does December best outside the capital. In 2025 it switched on its festive lights on 6 December, with wooden huts, a skating rink and weekend serenades in the Old Bazaar, and the municipality reported hotels fully booked through the month. It sits at about 900 m, so pack for frost. Nearby Voskopojë, a stone village of painted churches, is the easiest place to find snow, though nothing is guaranteed.

Hoping to ski? Above Dardhë, Bigëll is the country's only lift-served slope, snow permitting. Our Snow and skiing in Albania guide covers it, along with guided ski touring and the resorts over the border.

The coast is scenery and seafood, not a beach base. Durrës, Vlorë and Sarandë are working towns all year, Butrint stays open on winter hours, and a sunny December walk along an empty Riviera can be lovely. Base yourself in a town, not a seasonal village, and expect beach bars and sunbeds to be closed.

What is open and closed in December

Cities do not close. Hotels, restaurants, castles and museums in Tirana, Berat, Gjirokastër, Korçë, Shkodër and Sarandë trade all year, though many sites keep shorter winter hours, so check the day before. What shuts is the seasonal layer: beach businesses, boat trips, and most family guesthouses in the Alps.

The high north needs saying plainly. In February 2026 avalanches closed the road over Qafë Thore into Theth until 19 February, and closures after heavy snow can come at any point in winter. The Theth to Valbona hike is a summer route. Snowy valleys look wonderful in photos; reaching them is a local, day-by-day decision, not something to lock into a December itinerary.

December 2026 events and public holidays

The festive season starts at the very end of November and runs into the first days of January. The long weekend of Independence Day and Liberation Day is a busy time to travel inside Albania, and Vlorë, where independence was declared in 1912, holds the main flag-raising. Dates below are confirmed unless marked; where the 2026 programme has not been announced, we give last year's pattern and suggest you check closer to the date.

Christmas is a public holiday, but New Year's Eve is the bigger night out, and the Tirana market usually runs from early December into the first week of January. We keep the market hours, the New Year's Eve programme and holiday opening tips in Christmas and New Year in Tirana. If you plan to be there between Christmas and New Year, book early: Albanians living abroad fly home for the holidays, and French school holidays run from 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027.

A 7-day Albania itinerary for December

This loop keeps to towns that hold up in any weather and avoids the high passes. It starts and ends in Tirana and works with a private driver or a hire car; if you drive yourself, read Renting a car in Albania and carry chains for upland roads.

Seven days in December: capital, festive Korçë and the stone towns

  1. Day 1: Tirana

Arrive, walk the centre and Blloku, and see the lights on Skanderbeg Square after dark. Keep the evening easy.

  2. Day 2: Tirana in depth

Bunk'Art or the House of Leaves in the morning, the Dajti cable car if it is clear (not on Tuesdays), then a long lunch and the market in the evening.

  3. Day 3: Tirana to Korçë

Drive east via Elbasan and the Qafë Thanë pass, roughly three hours, leaving in daylight and checking the pass after snow. Evening in the Old Bazaar.

  4. Day 4: Korçë and Voskopojë

Morning in Voskopojë for its stone lanes and painted churches, snow permitting, then the cathedral, the market and a warm dinner back in Korçë.

  5. Day 5: Korçë to Berat

Cross back west to Berat. Arrive in time to walk the Mangalem quarter and climb to the castle before sunset at about 16:10.

  6. Day 6: Berat to Gjirokastër

Head south to Gjirokastër for the castle and the old bazaar. Bring a warm layer: nights here average close to freezing.

  7. Day 7: Gjirokastër to Tirana

An early start for the drive back north. If you fly the same day, leave a generous margin for traffic around the capital.

Here for Christmas or New Year? Run the loop the other way so you finish in Tirana for the 31st. Got ten days? Add a night in Sarandë for Butrint and the Blue Eye, keeping to Butrint's winter ticket hours, and a slow day in Durrës. For how long each version really needs, see How many days in Albania.

What to pack for Albania in December

Pack for rain first and cold second. Tirana and the coast need a waterproof and one warm layer; Korçë, Voskopojë and Gjirokastër evenings need a proper winter coat, hat and gloves. Good soles matter more than in summer, because polished stone streets in Berat and Gjirokastër are slippery when wet. Our Albania packing list by season has the full winter list.

December trip checklist

  • Waterproof jacket and a compact umbrella
  • Warm coat, hat and gloves for Korçë and Gjirokastër
  • Shoes with grip for wet cobbles and castle paths
  • Plan drives and outdoor sights to finish by about 16:00
  • Snow chains for any upland road in a hire car
  • Book Korçë and holiday-week hotels early
  • Keep one flexible day for a rain front or a road closure
